From 1 April 2018 there will be changes to the way green waste is collected.
Until recently garden waste has been approved for collection as part of Council's free residential hard refuse collection service. However when garden waste is collected as hard refuse, the organic materials end up in landfill instead of being composted. For this reason, garden waste will be removed from the approved items for hard waste collection.
When garden waste is sent to landfill it breaks down creating methane gas and leachates. Methane has a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon dioxide and the leachates in land fill can also quickly increase ground and water pollution. By diverting green waste away from landfill we grow South Australia’s circular economy and avoid heavy landfill taxes.
