The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is delighted to announce it will host the Stage 1 race finish of the 2019 Santos Tour Down Under, on Tuesday, January 15.
Mike Turtur, Race Director, Santos Tour Down Under said next year’s race would be the first time that a stage finish has been held in Port Adelaide, as Stage 1 travels from North Adelaide to Port Adelaide.
“This year we saw phenomenal crowds in Port Adelaide for a stage start and expect an even greater turn out and support for the stage finish in 2019. Port Adelaide is rich in history and tradition and their involvement in the inaugural race in 1999 has never been forgotten,” said Mike Turtur.
“We have designed the course expecting a fast, sprint finish on this stage and the new 3.4 km finishing circuit around the Port will give the locals and the fans even more opportunities to see the peloton and create a real atmosphere of celebration for the race.”
City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor, Gary Johanson, said the Council was honoured to be chosen to host the stage finish, which will take place in the historical state heritage and maritime precinct of Port Adelaide.
“After our success with the start of the race this year, we are delighted to be hosting the Stage one race finish at Port Adelaide,” said Mayor Johanson.
“The community really got behind the race and we won the Santos Best Dressed Town Award, so I am sure that we will all be looking to make next year even bigger and better.
“We are planning a big finish here at Port Adelaide, and the race presents a great opportunity again for our local businesses to take advantage of the increased tourism exposure both during the race and in the longer term.
“Port Adelaide is becoming a focus for events in South Australia, and we have a strong commitment to sports here.
“We look forward to celebrating our vibrant cycling culture once again, and I encourage our community to come out and support the Santos Tour Down Under in the heart of Port Adelaide next year.”
