As part of our civic relationship with
Ville de Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
in France, we have commissioned two local artists to create a large Australian mural on the wall of a police station in Cherbourg. The purpose of the exchange is to share Australian art and culture with Cherbourg and to give them a little bit of Wonderwalls, as a symbol of the relationship between our two cities. This is the first part of a reciprocal arrangement in which Port Adelaide would subsequently host a French artist with connections to Cherbourg at a future date
This piece that the artists are working on (concept pictured, not final piece) has a connection with the artwork behind the visitor Information Centre in Port Adelaide painted during Tarnanthi, and another piece on Commercial Road near the railway station painted during Wonderwalls.
South Australian artist
now lives in England and is an internationally recognised street artist. He has painted for the Port Adelaide Wonderwalls festival. He has lived and worked extensively in France so is familiar with the context for which the work is being created. He is probably best known locally for his purple and yellow birds and hearts mural on Todd Street, as well as his famous mural of David Bowie in Brixton which has become a shrine to the musician.
is an Adelaide based Aboriginal artist, and this exchange is the first time she will be taking her work overseas. She was one of the artists featured in the 2017 Port Adelaide
. Following this, she was commissioned by the City of PAE, with the support of the
Art Gallery of South Australia
, to complete a wall as part of Tarnanthi in the Port in October 2017. In early 2018 Elizabeth completed a collaborative wall in Adelaide city with Jimmy C commemorating the highly esteemed Aboriginal Elder Stevie Goldsmith.
Our Civic Relationship with Cherbourg is based around business opportunities, economic development education and training, sport, environment, art, culture, and tourism, stemming from the involvement of both regions in Australia’s Future Submarines program.
