Through our annual Australia Day Awards, we recognise the service, commitment, effort and achievements of people that have enhanced the quality of life in the Port Adelaide Enfield Council area.

2024 Australia Day Award Winners

Julie Bailey has devoted an impressive 23 years to the Semaphore Branch of the Country Women’s Association, with 22 of those years spent as treasurer and four as the chair of the State Handicraft Association. Beyond her organisational roles, Julie actively coordinates baby parcels for those in need and supplies essential items to the APY lands. Her unwavering commitment as a volunteer significantly influences the community on both state and local levels.

Denzel James emerges as an influential advocate for the youth in the City of PAE, displaying unparalleled dedication and determination to instigate positive change. His impactful endeavours have garnered nationwide recognition, earning him the prestigious title of one of UNICEF Australia's 9 Youth Ambassadors in 2023.

At just 9 years old, Max Osborne exemplifies the spirit of community service. Despite facing challenges in his own life, Max actively raises funds for the Largs Bay RSL, creating and selling earrings and brooches with 100% of the profits donated to the club. Max's generosity extends to providing food and water to the local homeless community, showcasing his big heart and love for community well-being. Max will often ask his family to food shop for the local people experiencing homelessness in the community and deliver little bags of food and water when they can afford to help him with this. Max has a big heart and a big love for his community and their wellbeing.

Ian Bailey has served as the volunteer CEO of Clearview Bowling Club since 2002, fostering a vibrant and sustainable club that promotes physical activity, friendship, and social connections. His passion for supporting individuals with disabilities in sports spans 30 years, particularly through his work with Disability Bowls. Despite recent challenges leading to the club's closure, Ian's tireless efforts ensured its responsible financial position, allowing him to donate remaining funds to organsations supporting people with disabilities. At 84, Ian continues his community work as a volunteer with the City of PAE.

The Mirning community shared a spectacular twilight lantern parade of the Jeedara Creation story that was visually stunning and culturally enriching for the wider community to enjoy.  This event brought the community together for a beautiful celebration of a great cause. The lanterns were made under the guidance of South Australian artists brought the community together regularly, and inspired many to make their own. The theatrical display of lanterns at sunset offered a unique event that was visually and aurally spectacular. These workshops and the Light for the Bight event have had a profoundly positive effect on multiple generations of the Mirning community, who have been able to publicly celebrate their culture and Country with all of the attendees. It was a truly special night.

CHATS in Cars, an initiative by Community Help and Togetherness, stands out as an emerging event dedicated to aiding those facing hardships in the western suburbs. This volunteer-driven charity serves up to 100 people with a fully cooked three-course meal every Friday morning, along with providing essential groceries and clothing. The inaugural "Chats in Cars" event, held during a cold night in June 2023, involved 25 cars in a sleepout to raise awareness for those sleeping rough in the western suburbs.'
