Living seawalls project

The Estuary Care Foundation have begun a living seawalls trial on the Port River shoreline, joining other trials in Sydney Harbour, Townsville and Singapore. These living seawalls enhance the biodiversity of the existing walls by increasing their surface area and inviting much more diverse microhabitats to form.

There are 22 uniquely designed 3D-printed tiles in total, as well as 4 display tiles. Each has been designed to ecological processes and have been retrofitted to the existing seawall, near the Archie Badenoch, to help improve marine biodiversity and water quality.

The Estuary Care Foundation was able to undertake this project with a $10K Community Environment Grant, from the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Natural Resources Board.

Living Seawalls is a Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) initiative that builds on years of marine green engineering research in collaboration with Reef Design Lab, a Melbourne-based design studio.
