Hanson Reserve in Ferrdyen Park incorporates one of the state’s few outdoor velodromes. Hanson Reserve has been used for cycling since the 1930s and a formal velodrome facility was constructed in 1965. During the 70’s and 80’s famous cycling athletes including Mike Turtur, Helen and Lyle Baird, Gordon ‘Pud’ Brooks and Stuart O’Grady competed there.
To continue the cycling legacy, the velodrome was reconstructed in 2019 with funding from the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing, the DPTI Planning and Development Fund and Sport Australia. This unique engineering feat showcases state of the art acrylic surfacing and custom-built safety fencing.
The velodrome is also complemented with a perimeter fitness loop path, sports floodlighting and a new playspace and picnic facilities to encourage and support healthy and active lifestyles.
The velodrome and infield oval are available for public use when not utilised for sports training and competition events.
Hanson Veldrome is home for Port Adelaide Cycling Club and Kilkenny Cycling Club. Bookings for group activities can be made through Cycling SA – https://cycling.org.au/sa
