Householders now have 4 locations to dispose of unwanted chemicals and paints. Choose the location which suits you best - you don’t have to live in the council area.

Light globes can be taken to the following locations for recycling

Wide range of globes accepted including fluorescent lamps and tubes, halogen lamps, tubes, bulbs and incandescent globes (excludes commercial quantities).

Please refer to the Which Bin website to search for nearby locations to recycle oil. Oil needs to be taken in a clean plastic container with a lid (original container is ideal). Avoid using paint cans or non-plastic containers.

Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals found in rock formations that were mined in Australia and overseas. It was used predominantly in building materials (such as asbestos cement) but it was also used in cars  (such as brake pads).

A number of agencies have responsibility with regards to asbestos depending on the location and circumstance. Visit the Asbestos Awareness SA site for more information.

Residents and painters can dispose of paint for free at Paintback sites. Maximums: 100 litres per visit and 20 litre containers.

Accepted:

  • Deck coating
  • Floor paint
  • Interior and exterior architectural paint (water and solvent based)
  • Primers, undercoats and sealers
  • Stains and shellacs
  • Varnishes and urethanes (single component)
  • Wood coatings (containing no pesticides)

Dry paint can go in the blue lid general waste bin. Paint can be dried by leaving the lid off or with a paint hardener available from hardware stores. Tap dry paint into the general waste bin and recycle the empty tin in the yellow lid bin.

Many batteries contain heavy metals and harmful elements such as nickel, cadmium, lead and mercury. Household batteries can be taken your City of PAE Libraries or the Civic Centre during opening hours and placed in the battery recycling tubes. For your car, boat, motorbike or other batteries please visit whichbin to find your nearest location.

Printer cartridges can be recycled via collection boxes located at the Civic Centre, 163 St Vincent St, Port Adelaide. Other options include Officeworks and JB HiFi stores, and participating Australia Post, Harvey Norman, Good Guys and Office National outlets.
