This afternoon we welcomed an education delegation from
Ville de Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
in France, as part of a cultural exchange to learn more about our city and the South Australian education system.
During their visit to the Civic Centre today
Claire Boan, Mayor of the City of PAE,
and former Mayor Gary Johanson, presented a framed set of historical photographs from World War 2. These photographs were taken over France by Douglas "Sammy" Sampson, a pilot from West Lakes. For more than 12 months, Sampson, a member of Photograph Reconnaissance Unit 16 RAF Squadron, flew his fighter up and down the coast of France taking photographs that were vital to the Allied war effort.
The French delegation included members of their education department, alongside teachers from Cherbourg, and Deputy Mayor Anna Pic. During their week long visit to South Australia they are meeting with education officials from the State Government, touring local schools and visiting sites of interest, based on the relationship created through the involvement of both cities in the construction of Australia's future submarines.
We are working alongside our friends from Cherbourg across a range of cultural, educational, environmental, tourism and business opportunities.
