The City of PAE has been working with a team from across Adelaide to create a brand new resource to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to read, sing and yarn with their little ones.
The Ngaityu Muiyu Tantu (My Feelings Bag) will reach 600 families and includes the book, puppets, clapping sticks and resources to help children to self-regulate when big feelings arise.
It was launched last week at Kalaya Children's Centre by the Hon. Blair Boyer MP, Minister for Education, Training & Skills.
Developed by Kalaya Children’s Centre Staff and Management Committee, in collaboration with City of PAE Libraries and Onkaparinga Libraries. The book, featuring children from Kalaya, was photographed and designed by the City of PAE Communications Team.
A limited supply of free backpacks containing picture books and toys to encourage storytelling, are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 3-5 years in the City of PAE. A small number of backpacks are also available for loan to the general community at all City of PAE Libraries.
For help with Kaurna pronunciation, you can watch this video of Amy from City of PAE Libraries reading the book with help from Zoey from Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi.
This project was funded by the Department for Education, South Australia's Local Government Early Childhood Community Innovation grants, administered by the Local Government Association of South Australia.
