Building Fire Safety Committee

Our Building Fire Safety Committee is responsible for ensuring that fire safety standards in existing buildings are maintained.

What the committee does

The Building Fire Safety Committee ensures that all buildings meet the necessary fire safety standards. This committee is made up of council staff, a building surveyor, a fire safety expert and a representative from the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service.

The committee regularly inspects buildings within the area and requests upgrades to fire safety measures if necessary. The level of upgrades required may vary based on several factors, such as the building's age, size and use, as well as changing legislation. The buildings the committee generally inspect include:

  • Hotels/ motels and other accommodation buildings
  • Supportive residential and aged care facilities
  • Buildings where large numbers of people may congregate
  • Warehouses, factories, shops, offices and other commercial buildings
