Joel is one of two City of PAE Environmental Health Officers who are Army Reservists, spending up to 20 days a year using their valuable and unique workplace skills in an entirely new setting, with more time available upon request.
Environmental Health Officers will advise commanders on issues from food safety and water quality to disease control and waste, including the disposal of biohazardous waste on the battlefield. They also work to assess environmental risks in barracks, on exercise, and on operations.
Joel said, “We can often use simple solutions to mitigate the risks, but it is great to be able to work in a different setting and use my skills in an entirely new way.”
The City of PAE is one of a small number of employers in the state that have a Defence Reserve Service Leave Policy, which enables us to accommodate staff that work in roles such as this.
