Yitpi Yartapuultiku, which translates to "Soul of Port Adelaide" in Kaurna language, is set to become a beacon of community unity and collaboration in Port Adelaide.
Construction at the Bower Road location shows roofing works are nearly complete which will enable the next stages of installation for services such as electrical, water and fibre along with cabling and ducting to the building.
Metal cladding to the outside of the building has begun and will include an exciting cultural art element (to be announced later). Landscaping is also progressing across the site, including the Women’s and Men’s cultural areas and the play space, forming the beginnings of a high-quality, family-friendly and immersive nature play space for the community.
The construction team have completed structural works along the living shoreline which included rocks placed around headlands to help establish new ecosystems and create structural stability for the shoreline, and rock pools for habitat creation.
The project’s Aboriginal Custodians have completed a variety of interpretive signage work showcasing cultural stories and illustrations, to be installed at a later date.
Several local and Aboriginal-owned businesses are now actively involved in the project across a range of trades including furniture, roof safety, civil services, landscaping and labour contracting.
Yitpi Yartapuultiku is on track to open in early 2025 and once complete, it will provide a place for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to learn, experience and be immersed in Aboriginal culture.
