Avian Influenza (H5 Bird Flu) has recently been detected in wild birds in Australia, including South Australia. The virus primarily affects birds and other animals and can cause serious illness and death in some species.
The risk to human health remains low, and human infections are rare. However, authorities are asking the community to remain vigilant and report any unusual bird deaths.
A new reporting website and information hub has been launched, and from 17 August, bird flu reporting in South Australia has changed to align with the national reporting framework.
You may notice Government or council staff collecting deceased birds in public spaces and wearing protective equipment. This is a precautionary measure designed to minimise exposure risks and support safe handling and testing processes where required.
What should you do if you find a sick or dead bird?
- Do not touch sick or dead birds
- Keep children and pets away from the area
- Record the location and, if possible, details such as the number and type of birds. Take photos or video.
- Report sightings to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
Large numbers of sick or dead birds are not normal and may require investigation by PIRSA and other authorities.
