Historic Reserve Information
Known locally as "Sentinel of Semaphore" this historic navigational aid stone tower was built in 1875 and was in use until 1932 - when wireless time signals were then used, it is the only such tower in the state. It was used for ship captains at the anchorage and the inner harbor to synchronise their marine chronometers, vital for calculating longitude at sea.
The black ball, big enough to be visible offshore was hoisted to the masthead at 12:57pm daily and dropped at exactly 1:00pm. Navigators then record the exact second the ball starts its descent to calibrate their clocks.
