Access and Inclusion

The City of PAE is committed to implementing outcomes that are inclusive and promote participation for all residents living in the city. While the personal experience and impact of disability is unique to an individual, we acknowledge that disability and mental health conditions are present in all cultural groups, across all ages, genders and socioeconomic levels across the community.

We are in a unique position where we can both advocate and drive change, directly and indirectly, to promote the rights of people with a disability and improve their capacity to engage in all aspects of community life.

The City of PAE has a history of being a leader in Access and Inclusion, recently Federal and State Governments have passed legislation which will improve the lives of people with disability and hold us accountable to the community.

We strive to provide equal chance for all people with disability to access to programs, services, activities and facilities in the City of PAE, to enable them to have the best lives possible. We work in partnership with the community to build an equitable, inclusive and accessible city.

The purpose of the Inclusive Communities Plan is to provide an integrated whole of Council approach and commitment to strengthen inclusion and access for all, through some key themes being:

  • commitment
  • advocacy
  • culture
  • built environment
  • products and services
  • communications and marketing
  • information communication technology

We have a strong history of developing plans that focus on access and inclusion. This Inclusive Communities Plan 2019-2024, and highlights our continued commitment to access and inclusion in all aspects of community life. This plan is intended to meet Council’s obligations under the new Disability Inclusion Act 2018.

Beach Access is something many people take for granted. Access to local beaches can be limited and sometimes impossible for members of the community who have additional mobility requirements. The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is working collaboratively with the public to improve access to key locations for people with disabilities

Our Beach Access mats provide a safer path of travel than the usual beach access points and are suitable for wheelchairs, gophers, prams, walking frames and crutches, as well as providing a clear path of egress for those with visual impairments. They are also helpful for older dogs to be able to access the beach for physical activity.

With an adult change table and tracking hoist system, both the Parks Library and the Lights Community and Sports Centre include recognised Changing Places to help individuals and their support provider to participate in the social life of our community. The Changing Places also features a nature-inspired ceiling design in colours which are both calming and soothing. The Parks Library was the first accredited Changing Places in South Australia.

Facilities:

  • adult change table
  • tracking hoist system
  • peninsula toilet
  • privacy curtain

The facility is accessible using a MLAK key (a key is also available from the Customer Service Desk).

View our library opening hours for the full listing of openings times at the Parks Library.

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield will be using MLAK to secure entry in some public spaces. This includes some of our accessible toilet facilities.

MLAK is a security system that enables people with disabilities to gain 24/7 access to a network of public facilities all across Australia.

You can apply for your own key * by visiting the Master Locksmiths Association of Australia web page and completing the application form.

*MLAK keys cost $20 including GST and applications will need to be validated.
